Transmute Standard | FAQ

What web browser bookmark formats are supported by Transmute Standard?

Transmute Standard supports Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, Firefox JSON Backup, Flock, Internet Explorer, Konqueror, Opera, Safari, SeaMonkey and XBEL.

What platforms does Transmute support?

Transmute runs on Windows using the Microsoft .NET Framework.

Transmute, unofficially, may also run on Linux and Mac OS X via use of the Mono Framework.

Will Transmute work in my preferred language?

In additional to being fully Unicode compliant, Transmute supports multiple cultures. If Transmute is not available in your language you can use the Translation Package to make a new language file and share it with others.

These resources are available now on the Transmute download page.

How do I run Transmute Standard in Linux?

  • First note that Linux is not officially supported, though you can still send bug reports and feature requests.
  • Install the Mono Framework v2.0 or higher.
  • Install the Mono WinForms 2.0 library if it is not included by default. For example, in Ubuntu use the Synaptic Package Manager to install libmono-winforms2.0-cil. Otherwise you will receive errors such as "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Windows.Forms'".
  • Download and extract Transmute Standard Portable to your desired location.
  • Run the executable with Mono. For example, "mono ~/Desktop/Transmute/Transmute.exe" (Replace the path with one reflecting where you decompressed the files).

How do I run Transmute Standard in OS X?

  • First note that OS X is not officially supported, though you can still send bug reports and feature requests.
  • Ensure that X11 is installed. If not, it is available on your OS X installation CD.
  • Install the Mono Framework v2.0 or higher.
  • Download and extract Transmute Standard Portable to your desired location.
  • If your edition is packaged as an OS X app: Run the app package as normal.
  • If your edition is not packaged as an OS X app: Run the executable with Mono. For example, "mono ~/Desktop/Transmute/Transmute.exe" (Replace the path with one reflecting where you decompressed the files).

Why isn't Maxthon supported?

Maxthon bookmarks are encrypted. As a workaround you can always export your bookmarks from inside of Maxthon and then use Transmute to transfer them elsewhere if you need to work with a format that only Transmute handles.

Where can I find my bookmarks file for Firefox Portable?

It is impossible for Transmute to automatically detect the location. However, in Firefox 3 Portable Edition the path will usually be something like "\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile\places.sqlite".
